A maintenance release of VisiWave (v5.0.3 ) is now available for download. If you already own v5.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v5.0.3:
- AP Marker Custom Names in Report View Were Incorrect
If you set a custom name on an AP Marker, save the survey file
then reload the survey file, the custom names won't be correct
when viewed on any report pages.
- Data Points Where Nothing Was Seen Were Not Contributing to
Heatmaps
If a data point that was collected but no access points where
seen at that location then that point was just skipped when
calculating a heatmap. Now that point contributes to the
heatmap by saying there is no coverage there.
- Changing the Survey Map Image Could Stretch Report Images
If you changed the survey map image file on an already
existing survey file, the width or height of a report image
would be wrong if the aspect ratio of the new image didn't
match the aspect ratio of the old image.
New features in v5.0.2:
- Failed to Load v4.0 Survey Files With "AP#'s" in Caption
Trying to load a survey file created with an earlier version
of VisiWave would fail if the string "AP#" occurred in
any caption or text description unless the string was
followed by a number.
- Issue When Generating Report With Legend Tab Outside Range
There was an issue with generating a report when the legend
for a heatmap had one of the tabs outside of the Min/Max
range of the color legend.
- Generating PDF Report Would Randomly Fail
An uninitialized variable would cause generating a PDF report
to randomly fail.
- Changing the Survey Map Image Could Stretch Report Images
If you changed the survey map image file on an already
existing survey file, the width or height of a report image
would be wrong if the aspect ratio of the new image didn't
match the aspect ratio of the old image.
- Loading v3.0 Survey Files Could Cause Data Points to be in the
Wrong Location
Survey files created using v3.0 or earlier of VisiWave did not
contain the floor plan image file, but rather the filename of
the image file. If that filename is no longer valid, then you
are prompted to pick the right image file. Doing this in v5.0
would cause the data points to not be located in the correct
locations.
New features in v5.0.1:
- Can't Add Data Points After Loading an Empty v4.0 Survey File
If you load a survey file created by v4.0 of VisiWave that
didn't have any data points in it already, then adding a data
point to it would give you the error message "Encountered an
improper argument".
- Issue Selecting Interference Tab After Stopping Continuous Capture
If you switched to the Interference Details Tab after stopping
a Continuous mode data capture it could cause a crash.
- Issue Setting the Name Property On a New Survey
On a new survey file, if you selected a floor plan image file
and set the "Name" property on the Name tab, then VisiWave
would show an error or crash.
- AP Names Sent from the AP Controller Were Not Presenting Correctly
The character conversion of AP Names sent by the AP controller
where not using the correct conversion and could end up
looking like Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters.
- Issue Loading and Saving Report Templates
Loading or saving Report Templates by pressing the Templates
button in the Report View wasn't working correctly.

A maintenance release of VisiWave (v4.0.8 ) is now available for download. If you already own v4.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v4.0.8:
- License Registration Improvement
Some recent changes to Windows--in particular the release
of Windows 10--has caused a few users to lose their
VisiWave license. This improvement has made it less
likely to lose your license. It is recommended to upgrade
to this release BEFORE upgrading to Windows 10.
After upgrading VisiWave, the first time you run it, you
will be asked to re-register your license to take
advantage of this improvement. You will need an active
internet connection for this one-time procedure.

A maintenance release of VisiWave (v4.0.7) is now available for download. If you already own v4.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v4.0.7:
- Difference Heatmaps in Google Earth
If the Secondary AP Filter property of a Difference
Heatmap was blank (meaning there would be no difference
heatmap overlaid on the map), then creating a Google
Earth KML file would crash during generation.
- Crash Viewing Options or Adding Data Point on Windows Server
If the optional feature "Wireless LAN Service" was not
installed under Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2012,
then VisiWave would crash when either collecting a new
data point or bringing up Options from the File menu.
This only occurred under Windows Server and only if the
Wireless LAN Service wasn't already installed.

A maintenance release of VisiWave (v4.0.6) is now available for download. If you already own v4.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v4.0.6:
- Touch Screen Support
Some actions such as panning the display and tapping a
data point could be difficult to do on tablets with touch
displays. VisiWave now has more direct support for touch
displays.
- AP List Disappearing on Start Up
The AP List that appears on the right side of the window
when in Survey View would sometimes disappear when
VisiWave was started. This would happen only if you
resized your window and the AP List pane in just the
right way.
- Propose New Location + Merged Survey File
When using the Propose New Location feature with a survey
file that was created by merging other survey files,
sometimes the heatmap created was obviously wrong. This
has been corrected.

A maintenance release of VisiWave (v4.0.5) is now available for download. If you already own v4.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v4.0.5:
- Select All 2.4GHz/5GHz APs
You can now right click on any SSID name in an AP List or
AP Filter to bring up a context menu. The menu lets you
select either all APs using 2.4GHz channels or all APs
using 5GHz channels under that SSID.

A maintenance release of VisiWave (v4.0.3) is now available for download. If you already own v4.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v4.0.3:
- "Merge Survey Files" Not Working With Some Survey Files
Survey files saved with v4.0.1 or v4.0.2 might produce an
error when trying to merge them together. The error says
that the floor plan image files are different (even when
they aren't). These survey files are now properly
handled during a merge.
New features in v4.0.2:
- Difference Heatmap Documentation
The built-in help now describes what a Difference Heatmap
is and how to use it. Press F1 from within VisiWave or
go to the Help menu and select Help Topics to view this
documentation.
- Mouse Wheel Changes
Now pressing the Control key while spinning the mouse
wheel zooms in and out on your survey map while in Survey
View. And, pressing the Shift key while spinning the
mouse wheel scrolls the survey map left and right.
- AP Marker Properties Bug Fix
Right-clicking on an AP Marker and changing its properties
could change the channel number for one or more APs. This
has been fixed in v4.0.2
New features in v4.0.1:
- Data Rates vs. Max Rates
VisiWave now distinguishes between the maximum data rate
supported by an AP and actual negotiated data rates.
VisiWave records the actual data rate negotiated between
the client and the associated AP. It also records each
neighboring AP's stated maximum data rate. Rates listed
for an associated AP are the actual data rates. Rates
listed for a neighboring (non-associated) AP are the
maximum rates.
- "Max Rates Only" Property for Data Rate Maps
Data Rate Maps have a new property called "Max Rates
Only". Setting this to "Yes" means that only the max
rates for non-associated APs are included in the
generated map. Setting it to "No" means that only actual
negotiated data rates with associated APs are included.
Setting it to "Both" includes both cases and is what
VisiWave used to do.
- Added Data Rate to AP List
The AP List report type now includes the data rate for
each AP included in the list.
- Data Rates Greater than 54Mbps Supported for Neighboring APs
Now data rates greater than 54Mbps are reported for non-
associated APs.
- Channel Bonding Reported
802.11n and 802.11ac support channel bonding which means
that more than a single 20MHz channel is used. 802.11n
supports bonding two 20MHz channels together. 802.11ac
supports bonding two, four, or eight channels together.
VisiWave now shows these bonded channels. For example,
a channel of "149/80MHz" means channels, 149, 153, 157,
and 161 are all bound together.
- 802.11 Protocol Now Listed
The data point details pop-up balloon and the AP List now
both show the highest 802.11 protocol supported by the AP.
For example, an 802.11ac access point will list the "Mode"
as "ac" whereas an 802.11g AP will list the Mode as "g".
Also, instead of stating an AP is in "Infrastructure" mode
vs. "Ad hoc" mode, now all APs are assumed to be in
Infrastructure mode unless "Ad hoc" is listed as part of
the Mode. For example, an 802.11n radio operating in Ad
hoc mode will have a Mode of "n/Ad hoc".
- Data Points with Invalid Channels Now Detected
Sometimes a wireless driver will return invalid channel
numbers for the associated AP when the client is at the
edge of the coverage area. These data points are now
detected and not listed as part of the real AP.
- Min/Max Legend Values on Interference Heatmaps
The minimum and maximum values for the heatmap legend
for Interference Heatmaps could only be set to
zero--which means use the default values. Now they can be
set to actual dBm values just like with regular heatmaps.
- License Registration Issue
In very rare cases, the initial registering of a license
would work for a brief time then the license would become
unregistered. This case is now properly handled.
- Non-ASCII Characters in PDF Filenames or Folders
Previously you couldn't use a PDF document as a floor plan
image if the file name or folder contained non-ASCII
characters.

Original new features found in v4.0.
A maintenance release of VisiWave (v3.0.13) is now available for download. If you already own v3.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v3.0.13:
- Debug Code Left in Release 3.0.12 Removed
Some debugging code was inadvertently left in v3.0.12
which compromises the data collected. You should
immediately upgrade to v3.0.13 which doesn't have the
errant debug code.
(Fixed in v3.0.13)
- AP Markers in Exported Image
If you resized the image when using File->Export->Image
and ask to export your AP Markers, then the location of
those markers was wrong. This only happened when
exporting an image from the Survey View--the Report View
exporting worked fine.
- Wi-Spy Sometimes Not Found under Windows 8
Depending on what other USB devices you had plugged in
under Windows 8, sometimes VisiWave couldn't find your
Wi-Spy USB device.
- Channel Map with Highlighted Overlaps
A channel map that maps just channels (instead of channels
plus each AP) was showing highlighted overlapping areas
based on each AP rather than just on channel.
- Self-Contained HTML Reports
One image file was not brought into the HTML file--an
image dealing with the heatmap legend. This is now
properly included in the HTML.
- Easily Turn Off Help Messages
While doing some common operations like collecting survey
data, VisiWave pops up help messages. You can turn these
on/off under Options. But now you can also select a check
box on the message to turn them off.
- Highlight Overlaps in AP Coverage Maps
AP Coverage maps did not allow you to highlight areas
with more than one overlapping AP--only Channel Maps and
Data Rate Maps allowed this. Now AP Coverage maps allow
it too.
A maintenance release of VisiWave (v3.0.12) is now available for download. If you already own v3.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. (Added in v3.0.12)
A maintenance release of VisiWave (v3.0.11) is now available for download. If you already own v3.0 of VisiWave, just download the eval version and install it over-top of your current version. Your existing license will continue to work. If you would like to evaluate VisiWave, just download the eval version and try it out.
New features in v3.0.11:
- Support for Windows 8
If VisiWave was set to check for updated releases
automatically, then an error would occur when starting
VisiWave under Windows 8. The error would say you need
to re-install VisiWave. This now works correctly under
Windows 8.
(Fixed in v3.0.11)
- Support for New Wi-Spy DBx (with Clip and Cable)
The Wi-Spy DBx released in late 2012 that can be clipped to
your laptop is now supported. That release's firmware had
a minor change that wasn't compatible with previous
releases of VisiWave.
(Fixed in v3.0.11)
We now have a new, easy-to-remember website address:
WiFiSiteSurvey.net. For now it just points to the same site as visiwave.com, but we hope to make WiFiSiteSurvey.net its own destination in the future.
Until then, use either website name whenever you need to get to any of the resources available on our site.
